karongi Islands Lake KivuAn island is a piece of land surrounded by a water body. The Karongi islands are 16 in number, located on Lake Kivu in Gisenyi, some of them are rather smaller and less significant than the others. The most popular 6 include;

Munini Island: This also known as Napoleon’s island, a name it got because it is said to be shaped like Napoleon’s hat. This island is popular for being that place you will find a colony of fruit bats, it is also home to a very big population of birds and of different species.

Nyakarwa peninsula: This is a very tiny peninsula also in Lake Kivu and it is a really very good place to visit if you are interested in birds. This peninsular is definitely the place to visit if you are bird watchers who wishes to have a less tiring birding adventure in Rwanda. You will begin your birding adventure from the office in the western province of Bwishura sector. You will have to follow the clear footpaths and this walk will surely be an amazing recreational walk while walking along the shores of Lake Kivu.

The other is the Mpembe Peninsula footpath which can be accessed using a boat all the way from Kibuye. This peninsula is privately owned, offers a 4km long nature walk, it’s a tourism site with camping facilities and while there, you can expect to see  quite a number of different bird species if you are keen enough.

There is the Amahoro Island which is privately owned and it is all surrounded by so many other islands. Today, this island is being transformed into a really great tourism destination with great camping sites for the campers, they can offer you a boat if you wish to have a boat tour, swimming and other water sports activities can be done. More to these is the bird watching which can also be done on this island thus making it a really great destination for the bird watchers.

Mpembe Island is next to Mpembe peninsula and these two places are connected by bridge. It is also accessible from Kibuye using the boat and this offers you the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful view of Lake Kivu and the other entire island.

You can always go for the boat trips along Lake Kivu using the wooden boats that are called the blue bird boats any time of the year; you can visit any of those island. These boats carry 10-15 people per boat tour at a fair price
