illegal-ivory-trinketsJust last week, an arrest of four transit passengers was made at the Jomo Kenyatta Airport – JKIA in Kenya. Of these four, three passengers were scheduled to fly into Hongkong and they are believed to be coming from Ghana as well as Mozambique, where they had possibly purchased the ivory mementos. Actually It is a bad reputation to the customs and airport security departments in those countries were these people where able to leave without the bloody ivory items being noticed. However their luck ran out once they landed in Nairobi. JKIA deployed a team of well trained security officials who also use sniffer dogs and this team was able to detect this team of people transporting the bloody ivory.

Last year the Kenyan government trained a team of Wildlife Service staff and dogs for a period of two months. This was done under the canine program of the African Wildlife Foundation and the success of this training has surely paid off with this success. Such similar teams have been stationed at Mombasa where all containers entering the country are not simply scanned but also usually inspected physically to identify any illegal imports hidden in the ordinary cargo .

Now all eyes will remain on the court proceeding to see its ruling and if at all an example will be set for any criminals involved in this illegal trade. Onlookers predict huge monetary fines plus jail sentences of a log time for the arrested people.

Many wildlife activists from different parts of the world have come out to fight and protest against the brutal murder of wildlife in this case elephants for trophy parts which wildlife would otherwise have been seen by holiday on Safari in Kenya and even boast the country’s tourism industry.
