ngamba-island-chimpanzeesThe Ngamba Island remains Uganda’s only chimpanzee sanctuary and one of the best places to view chimpanzees on your Safari in Uganda. The good news is that this sanctuary is getting more and more chimpanzees which means it is steadily expanding. There haven’t been any registered death for quite a long time but births have been recorded with the most recent being Kyewunyo’s baby girl chimp who was born on 17th Feb 2016. Just like its mother Katie’s case, Kyewunyo which means surprise was born on 17th of Feb and once more, it conceived during the time of an implant failure

The care takers revealed that Kyewunyo and her little stayed in good health after birth although Kyewunyo had no idea how to breast feed her little one just like many other new mothers. Care givers and Veterinarians had to introduce another new mother chimpanzee from the neighboring island Kiimi Island so Kyewunyo could learn from her. Just like the humans, chimpanzees need help to learn a few tactic of parenthood from the experienced. They do this through imitation and so in the case of Kyewunyo, she after a short time was able to breast feeding perfectly.

The increase in the population is steady one given the fact that even last year, a juvenile chimpanzee Afrika gave birth to a baby boy. Although there were medical issues that required that the baby and mother be separated for proper medical attention so his broken arm could heal. By April, both these babies should be ready to live together with the rest of the chimpanzees in the sanctuary.

A Chimpanzee Safari to the Ngamba sanctuary is worthwhile because you get to have closer contact with these primates. You will realize a few things about them for example the fact that they Chimpanzees are really social species which survive best if living a community rather than as loner thus the reason the babies have to join the group. The process of inclusion takes some time since the chimpanzees don’t just welcome a new member into the already organized communities. Usually what the care takers do in introducing the little ones to the female members who by nature will bond with them to protect them from being hurt by more so the grown up males.

It is important to appreciate the work of different people and organizations towards that maintenance of this sanctuary and supporting the different projects for example the most urgent now is constructing a wall and also do repairs to the damages caused by the wind. Ngamba chimpanzee sanctuary is one of the best places to visit in Uganda when you wish to watch chimpanzees at a closer range and AA safaris can make that happen.
