The area it covers varies greatly with the amount of rainfall, with an average range between 114 and 991 sq kms. At the beginning of the 20th Century, Naivasha completely dried up and disappeared. The resultant open land was diverted into a farmland. A few years later , heavy rains re- created the lake and swallowed up the newly established estates. Afternoon wind and storms could cause the Lake to become unexpectedly rough and produced high waves a reason why the local Maasai christened the lake Nai’posha meaning ”rough water”, which the British later miss-pelt as Naivasha.
